When it comes to the video gaming world, 2017 has been a groundbreaker. Extracting the top 10 Games of the Year (GOTY) from a pool of well-crafted releases was a pain in the neck. The year offered a lot of tremendous games, thus in order to come up with this list, we had to go through one hell of a debate. Game developers did a stellar job in presenting games during this vintage year. So, folks, buckle up for one hell of a list of the most outstanding games in the year of 2017. Wait! Before that, let me enlighten you the criteria used to come up with this list. I know most of you are quick to jump through your first floor window just because your favourite game is not on the list. Well, games included were those that had a standalone title, complete without any DLC. The platform was not included as games considered were from across all platforms i.e. Nintendo, Xbox, Play Station, as well as PC. Now that I have cleared the air, there you go:

  1. Divinity: Original Sin II (PS4)

This is not only an improvement of its already outstanding predecessor, but it is also one of the finest RPG games we have witnessed in years. Of course, just like any other game, you will find a few (if not none) bugs here and there but in overall, the game is a masterpiece that manages to deliver a powerful storytelling and impressive selection of characters. One of the most outstanding features of this game is in how the Larian studios manage to present its content. The graphics are beyond imagination and gameplay is as smooth as the back of a spoon.

  1. Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4)

The game carries one of the best flexible combats. Although the art of fighting robotic dinosaurs in the post-apocalyptic world seems to be overrun in the sci-fi genre, Horizon manages to deliver the game in such a manner that the player is not left outside the world. By merging humanity with the existence of robotic animals, players are able to have a sense of belonging. The storyline is engaging and touching such that it is easy to get attached to our beloved protagonist Eloy.

  1. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (PC, PS4)

This is a game that will not let you enjoy it while in your comfort zone. It pushes you to limits by letting you control troubled young women who embark on a tempestuous journey. While playing the game, you will hear voices that will be telling you things. Just like Randy Orton, you will be hearing voices in your head, telling you what to do to them. Anyway, apart from the crazy scary ass voices, the game delivers one of the best subversive dialogue. The experience is as good as the one of someone fighting the life of living with mental illness (not that I know the experience but after playing the game I could relate.) Graphics are on point for a horror movie with mountainous views that are breathtaking. For those who are afraid of heights, the game will try you with one dare stare while walking sideways by the side of the mountain.

  1. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)

When the famous protagonist Nathan drifted into the sunset the previous year, I thought this was the end of an exciting cinematic game. However, little did I know Naughty Dog was cooking something even better. Based on Nathan’s cohorts Chloe and Nadine, Unchartered manages to deliver an exciting and interesting story that includes enthralling dialogue between the two. The environment is beautiful and the world is vast. Thus, the game is a must if you are looking for an adventure that consists of driving trucks in the bush with guns blazing.

  1. Assassin’s Creed: Origins (PC, Xbox, PS4)

This game is amazing on all fronts. There is a no way that it could have missed out on the list of top 10 games 2017. Origins is a masterpiece in delivering a beautiful open deserted world. Taken back to ancient times, you have a lot to explore. From viewing a village from afar through the hawkeye to hunting a target in the mix of a mad sandstorm, Origins delivers a story that is full of secrets. The game delivers the biggest and most connected map on the Assassin’s Creed’s entire series. There is a lot to do and to discover as you will have to collect clues to solve problems and do some impressive gladiator fighting. Graphics are on point and missions are well executed.

  1. Resident Evil 7 (Xbox, PS4, PC)

If you think you can spell the word terrified while being terrified, then you should try this game. Resident Evil 7 is one of a kind and with so many games doing well in 2017, this one outdid the rest. I mean, this is a game that will push you out of your comfort zone, for all good reasons though. It’s a first-person game that will take you on a survival-horror adventure. With the introduction of VR, the game does look outstanding and scarier than ever.

  1. Wolfenstein 2 (Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC)

This is actually my personal favourite for the year 2017. This game was groundbreaking with its well-written story that is provocative. If you thought Bruce Willis was a Die Hard, then Wolfenstein’s protagonist William will change your mind. This guy is tough as a rock with a sad upbringing story fueled by a cruel racist father who would at times choke him to sleep for playing with a black friend. The game’s narration is on point, complemented by fast-paced gun blazing scenes.

  1. Persona 5 (PS4)

This idiosyncratic gem of a game presents a misfit school children that have to fight demons that are pan-dimensional at the same time attending lessons. This group of kids also need to make money while making out with each other. Persona 5 is a super stylised role-playing adventure game that will let you crawl through the dungeons killing foes, as well as seek a job as a barista. All of these features is complemented by great experience and amazing sound effects.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo, Switch/Wii U)

Not only is the open world big and beautiful, but it surprisingly runs by the rules of the world. This is one feature that is rare to find in games, however, Legend of Zelda executes it so well such that you end feeling like you belong to the Hyrule world. Even after spending 50 hours on the game, you will still have a lot of puzzles and mysteries to solve/discover. The AI of your opponents is quite impressive. When playing the game, your gaming intellectuality will be provoked as opponents have the ability to read your moves. This is a game that one should play at least once in their lifetime.

  1. Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo, Switch)

Dubbed as Nintendo’s finest, Mario Odyssey could not have been better to take the crown. This latest 3D experience for Nintendo’s interminable protagonist Mario sees him crossing fantastical grounds; not excluding the emphatically human New Donk City in a quest to rescue Peach from the infamous enemy Bowser. The intrigue of playing this game, as usual, is in acing a scope of platforming moves. It presents a world that is full of wonderful ideas, as well as inventions. If you want a treat, then Super Mario Odyssey should be your game to play.

Guys, as I said in the beginning, 2017 has been awesome when it came to video games. Regardless the platform you are on, 2017 saw a string of beautifully crafted games being released across all platforms. With that said, a lot of time got invested to come up with this list. I am glad to have experienced the year of 2017 and look forward to 2018.
