Starting Age of Wonders: Planetfall, I had no idea what I was getting into. The description seemed captivating so I thought id give it a shot. I had no idea about the crazy rides I was getting myself into. The game is a spin-off addition in the Age of Wonders series. The game is a combination of everything Sci-Fi, mixing the craziest factors to randomly generated planets mixing them with crazy interesting characters that make the game a must-play the game. From flesh-eating factions to crazy jellyfishes, the game has it all.
The game follows the fast-paced, dynamic style of the previous installments in the series. The Age of Wonders: Planetfall is easily adaptable even for beginners like myself like I found out during the gameplay. The game is familiar to players with experience with the Civilizations series. The game follows the standard steps while initially forwarding the game. Creation of cities after arriving on the planet. Players explore new technologies and explore surrounding areas. Military creation is also a major part of the series. The goal of the game is the elimination of the opponents. The achievement can also be achieved by getting to a world-changing achievement.
The Age of Wonders: Planetfall has a lot of aspects in common with the Classic Series; Heroes of Might and Magic. There are a lot of elements that are common with the Civilizations series as well. The highlighting achievement of the game is the characters that are full of individual personality traits that add massively to the gaming experience. A combination of different skills and resources are mandatory in order to be successful. It takes some time to get used to the different factions and skills. Playstyles can also make a major impact while playing the game. Building alliances is also extremely important during the course of the game and it can add massively to the available advantages. The gain includes Penguins, which makes it a typical Age of Wonders game.
The multi-threaded aspect of the story makes the narrative extremely compelling. Amongst the new additions are the Vanguards who are hybrid human factions. There are also the Dvar. Dvar’s stand out due to their tendency to use explosives and mining. The midgame units can tunnel, which can be an extremely handy skill to add to the mix.
One of the minor shortcomings that I observed during the course of my gameplay was the difficulty in accessing the information available which was an extremely important aspect of the gameplay. Due to the lack of available information, the knowledge of which factions to choose was confusing which led to some awkward moments.
However, despite all the minor flaws of the game, the experience was generally amazing and the landscape and the combination of the different factions and their available skills felt like an amazing mixture which made the experience extremely fun. The Age of Wonders: Planetfall is highly recommended purely due to its visual possibilities which make the experience extremely exciting.
